Manufacturing Value of Sales Index up at 9.2% in May

On a yearly basis, Value of Net Sales Index (VaNSI) grew 9.2 percent in May 2011. This was attributed to the two-digit growth in sales value reported by six major sectors, namely: food manufacturing, petroleum products, footwear and wearing apparel, beverages, chemical products and publishing and printing. 

VaNSI, on a month-on-month basis, recovered as it registered a growth of 4.5 percent in May 2011. This was contributed by 16 major sectors, with two-digit increases noted in the following: paper and paper products, publishing and printing, beverages and machinery except electrical. 

Average capacity utilization in May 2011 for total manufacturing stood at 83.2 percent. Eleven of the 20 major sectors registered capacity utilization rates of 80 percent and more, namely: basic metals, petroleum products, food manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products, electrical machinery, paper and paper products, chemical products, miscellaneous manufactures, rubber and plastic products, machinery except electrical and textiles

The proportion of establishments that operated at full capacity (90% to 100%) was 17.2 percent in May 2011. About 60.2 percent of the establishments operated at 70% to 89% capacity while 22.6 percent of the establishments operated below 70% capacity.

R10 Populace Able to Set Aside for Savings

Based on the results of the 2009 Family Income and Expenditures Survey (FIES) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), the average family income and average family expenditures of all Filipino families in Region 10 was 165 thousand pesos and 139 thousand pesos, respectively. 

This means that Region 10 populace was able to set aside savings of 26 thousand pesos per year or 15.7 % of the average income. This was presented by NSO 10 Statistician  Janith Cabalang-Aves during the Data Dissemination Forum last June 22, 2011 at Grand Caprice Restaurant, Cagayan de Oro City. Aves also revealed that in every P1, 000 income, a large proportion or P377 was spent for food, P82 for housing, P62 for transportation and communication and P62 for education and medical expenses.

According to NSO 10 Regional Director, Dr. Salvador A. Aves, CESO V, the FIES is a vital input in the calculation of critical poverty data necessary to monitor the poverty incidence in the country.

Honorable Carmelita N. Ericta, NSO Administrator was the keynote speaker of the data dissemination forum. Mr. Tomas P. Africa, former Administrator of NSO and Mr. Linnito M. Pascual, Regional Head of the National Statistical Coordination Board presented papers using the FIES data. Engr. Leon M. Dacanay, Regional Director of NEDA 10, Dr. Juanito Demetrio, Asst Regional Director of Commission on Higher Education 10 and Ms. Lordilie Enjambre, Executive Director, Oro Chamber of Commerce were the discussants.

MARRIAGE RECORD SLIP DOWN TO 7 PERCENT WHILE BIRTH UP BY 2.0 IN 2008



Registered marriages totaled 486,514 in 2008, a decrease by 0.7 percent There were 486,514 marriages registered in the country in 2008, a decrease of 0.7 percent from the 2007 count of 490,054.
Among regions, NCR top the list with 15.8 percent of the total marriages in the country, while the least was recorded in ARMM with 0.5 percent.

Women preferred to marry at ages 20-24 while men at ages 25-29. More than one-third (37.5%) of bride got married at ages 20-24, while for the groom (35.3%) at ages 25-29.

Teen marriages declined by 0.04 percent from previous year. A total of 65,958 teen marriages recorded or about 13.6 percent of the total marriages in the country, a decline of 0.04 percent from the 2007 count of 69,052. Teen brides are four times more than the teen grooms.

Civil rites still preferred by Filipinos. Marriages celebrated through civil rites numbered 199,680 or 41.0 percent of the total marriages reported during the year. Wedding ceremonies in Roman Catholic churches was the second highest with 176,389 or 36.3 percent of the total reported marriages.
Compared to the data a year earlier (2007), it can be observed that the number and percentages of marriages under civil rite and in Roman Catholic ceremonies decreased in 2008. On the one hand, it can be noted that marriages in Islam, tribal and other religious rites increased in number and percentages from 2007 to 2008.
In a related vital statistical record on births:

Registered live births rise to 1.78 million. There were 1,784,316 live births registered in the country in 2008, an increase of 2.0 percent from the 2007 count of 1,749,878. Of these, 52.0 percent were males (928,080) and 48.0 percent were females (856,236), resulting to a sex ratio of 108.4 males per 100 females.

NCR records the highest occurrence of births. Of the 1.78 million births, around 288 thousand or 16.2 percent of the total births occurred in the National Capital Region (NCR), while the least was recorded in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with 14.9 thousand births or 0.8 percent of the total.

Teenage mothers increase by 7.64 percent. A total of 186,527 births were born to teenage mothers (under 20 years of age), an increase of about 7.64 percent from the previous year’s count of 173,282. The number of births born to teenage mothers (186,527) was five times greater than the number of births born to teenage fathers (39,217).

Illegitimate babies up by 12.5 percent. There were 668,841 illegitimate births registered in 2008, an increase of 12.5 percent from the 2007 count of 594,744. Of the total births (1,784,316) registered in 2008, 37.5 percent were illegitimate. Around 40.0 percent of illegitimate babies were born to mothers between the ages 20-24.
Four in five babies born to women under age 20 are illegitimate. Majority (79.2 %) of babies born to women under 20 of age were illegitimate.

SAUDI ARABIA HOLDS 22.2 % OFWs

Saudi Arabia was the most preferred destination of OFWs with 22.1 percent of the total OFWs working in this country during the period April to September 2010. The other preferred destinations of OFWs were: United Arab Emirates (15.1%); Qatar (6.3%); Singapore (5.9%); and Hong Kong (5.7%). Almost one-third of the total OFWs in April to September 2010 were laborers and unskilled workers (32.0%). Those who worked as service workers and shop and market sales workers made up 15.1 percent. The trade and related workers (14.9%) and plant and machine operators and assemblers (14.3%) registered similar proportions.

The total remittance sent by OFWs during the period April to September 2010 was estimated at 141.2 billion pesos. These remittances included cash sent home (104.9 billion pesos), cash brought home (30.1 billion pesos) and remittance in kind (6.2 billion pesos). Of the total cash remittance sent by OFWs, the remittance sent by laborers and unskilled workers comprised the biggest share with 20.6 billion pesos or an average remittance of 39 thousand pesos per OFW. OFWs working in Asia, comprising 80 percent of all OFWs, have the biggest share of cash remittance (70.9% of the total cash remittance). The proportions to total cash remittances that came from other countries were: North and South America (11.7%), Europe (11.3%), Africa (3.8%) and Australia (2.3%). The majority of OFWs sent their remittance through bank (73.7%) while the rest through door to door (8.0%), agency or local office (3.1%), through friends or co-workers (0.9%) or through other means (14.4%).
